Creativity is at the heart of what it means to be fully human.
Paddington Uniting Church has a long history of supporting creative endeavours as an integral part of its mission. Forty years ago we started the Paddington Bazaar (now Paddington Markets), Sydney’s original arts & crafts market, to support the dynamic artistic community in Paddington and beyond. For over fifteen years we have used our church and hall as venues for a diverse range of creative endeavours, from art exhibitions to musical concerts, theatre performances and dance classes.
At Paddington, creativity is also central to our worship life. We encourage creative experimentation in the form of our worship, which has seen us use labyrinths, dramatic performance, multimedia meditations, participatory prayer stations, even a ‘nightclub church’ service! Many prayers we use regularly have been written by our church members as well.
We are currently blessed to have Paul Somerville, the award-winning songwriter, as one of our Elders in the evening service. Paul’s songs come from our experience and mission as a church, such as inclusiveness, peace and justice, brokenness and doubt, the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit and the embrace of ambiguity,
